Hello everyone,

I received this e-mail that looks like it is from Amazon.com. I called Amazon at  1-866-216-1072. Amazon ensured me that this e-mail is not from them! Amazon told me not to click on any of the links in the e-mail. "Links not shown below" If you get a e-mail like this one what do you do.

1. Forward the e-mail to stop-spoofing@amazon.com

2. Do not click any of the links in the e-mail

3. Delete the e-mail

4. Run your CCleaner, Superantispyware, and Norton Antivirus.

5. Never give out your Social Security Number over the phone, e-mail, or any other way unless you initiated the contact  and are sure of the person or entity you are giving it to.

Dear Ed Trumble:

To ensure compliance with US federal law, Amazon Payments accountholders are required to provide a Social Security Number. You must provide this information before Monday, December 31st, 2012 to ensure your account activity is not interrupted.

Hello Ed,

Please rest assured that we understand your concerns regarding the e-mail message you received. We are also very concerned about the implications of this message and the misappropriated use of our name.

The e-mail you received did not originate from Amazon.com and we had no part in it or its content.

Altering the appearance of the sender in e-mail headers can be a relatively simple process. Copying the general appearance of a website is also simple.

Note that you can always check the validity of order information by checking Your Account. Click "Your Account" on the top right-hand side of the Amazon.com homepage. As a security measure, we require customers to enter their password to access all account information.

We recommend that you delete the e-mail. For your protection, do not respond to it, and do not open any attachments or click any links it contains.

If you responded to the e-mail or visited a linked website but didn't provide any personal information (such as your login or password), your Amazon.com account information should still be safe. However, if you did respond or if you visited a forged website and entered your Amazon.com login and password (or any other personal information), we recommend that you update your Amazon.com password immediately by going to Your Account (www.amazon.com/your-account) and selecting "Change Account Settings." If you provided financial information, you may want to contact your bank or credit card provider.

We also recommend running anti-virus or anti-malware software whenever you receive a suspicious e-mail, especially if you opened an attachment or visited a web site that was linked in the e-mail.

To learn more about ways to protect yourself from phishing, please visit our Help pages:

I hope I've been able to alleviate your concerns. Thank you again for alerting us to this situation so that we can take action.

I hope this information helps. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Thank you for your inquiry. Did I solve your problem?

CLAIMS OF BEING STRANDED SWINDLE CONSUMERS OUT OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS

07/01/10—The IC3 continues to receive reports of individuals' e-mail or social networking accounts being compromised and used in a social engineering scam to swindle consumers out of thousands of dollars. Portraying to be the victim, the hacker uses the victim's account to send a notice to their contacts. The notice claims the victim is in immediate need of money due to being robbed of their credit cards, passport, money, and cell phone; leaving them stranded in London or some other location. Some claim they only have a few days to pay their hotel bill and promise to reimburse upon their return home. A sense of urgency to help their friend/contact may cause the recipient to fail to validate the claim, increasing the likelihood of them falling for this scam.

If you receive a similar notice and are not sure it is a scam, you should always verify the information before sending any money.

If you have been a victim of this type of scam or any other Cyber crime, you can report it to the IC3 website at www.IC3.gov. The IC3 complaint database links complaints for potential referral to the appropriate law enforcement agency for case consideration. Complaint information is also used to identity emerging trends and patterns.

Craigslist Scams

I would like to let all of my customers and friends know of the scams going on with Craigslist. I have put some refurbish computers on Craigslist for sell, thinking it would be a good way to get the word out. Well it worked I had no less that 5 replies the very next day from scammers wanting me to sell the computer to them with little to know information using their shipping company.

I also advertised my services on Craigslist an again I got several replies that so and so had 10 Laptop that they wanted to ship me to work on, then have me ship them back by way of their shipping company with little to know information.

The scammers will overpay you for your trouble because the checks or money orders look good and the bank will take them, but weeks later the bank tells you that the check was no good and you are stuck for the money.

How do you fight this well It's like anything else you shine the  light truth on them.

I ask them for their contact information.

I tell them I have to speak to them one on one.

I tell them I do not except their method of payment, and I change it to say a check.

I ask what bank the check  will be drawn on and the name on the account so I can check it out.

I tell them they are responsible for setting up shipping or I use my shipping company.

I tell them I will not ship till the money has cleared the bank no matter what.

The long and shot of it is they want to give you bad money; a fake money order, bad check, or a stolen credit card. Then get you to give them good money when you pay for their shipping or perform a service for them.
